This project examined the application of a forensic analysis of cosmetics for the undergraduate teaching laboratory using infrared spectroscopic and microscopic techniques. Typical components of cosmetics (high and low luster mica, talc, sericite, spherical silica, dimethicone on talc) were characterized using FTIR and microscopy, as were commercially-available make-up samples. Make-up swabbed from a victim’s face was analyzed and compared to open cosmetic containers from her home. A make-up smudge on a suspect’s shirt was analyzed to differentiate possible sources and possible match to the make-up on the victim’s face. Classification of the samples and possible links between victim and suspect were determined in an efficient and simple enough manner for the teaching lab to adapt as a procedure. Difficulties in comparison and conclusions limited by class characteristics will be addressed.
