Supported metal nanoparticles find important applications in catalysis. Understanding how nanoparticles nucleate and grow is critical to controlling their structure, size and distribution on a support. Crystalline metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) represent a new platform in which to systematically explore and decouple the factors that control nanoparticle growth. Not only can the MOF surface be decorated with different metal species or combinations of metal species (which can subsequently be reduced to form the nanoparticles), but the nodes of the MOFs can be functionalized with different organic moieties to modify the mobility of the metals on the MOF surface. Using insitu synchrotron-based X-ray scattering methods, we explore how supported nanoparticle growth is governed by: (1) the mobility of the metal species on the support surface, (2) the dimensions of the pores/channels in the support, (3) the growth habit of the nanoparticle phase itself.<br/>Specifically, we use differential PDF analysis to recover the local atomic structure of the MOF and catalytic nanoparticles and difference electron density analysis of powder diffraction data to map the location of the supported species confined within the three-dimensional MOF lattice.<br/>
