Single-molecule magnets (SMMs) are discrete molecules that possess an intrinsic energy barrier to magnetic spin reversal. The magnetic properties of SMMs arise from the presence of a double energy well, separating positive spin values from negative spin values. These spin values can be thought of as a 0 or 1 using traditional binary coding. Thus, SMMs show promise as data storage devices. However, more work needs to be done before SMMs can be used commercially for data storage. One important drawback facing SMMs is that they must be able to maintain a magnetic configuration at ambient temperature for long periods of time. Another, practical problem facing SMMs as data storage devices is being able to easily locate and recall the specific bits storing the data. One solution is to deposit SMMs onto surfaces to facilitate data location and recall. We have chosen to explore these two problems using a family of inorganic macrocycles analogous to crown ethers known as metallacrowns (MCs) Metallacrowns are ideal candidates for studying the magnetic properties and deposition properties because the synthesis of MCs can be repeated easily and various properties, such as the ring size, metal identity, and ligand identity, of MCs can be manipulated. As a first step towards depositing MCs onto surfaces, we present the solution properties of Mn(OAc)2[12-MCMn(III)N(shi)-4], a planar, 12-membered MC with known SMM properties. The solution properties in various polar organic solvents were studied using LC-MS and UV-visible spectroscopy. Solvents that maintained the structural integrity of the MC were used in the deposition of MCs onto graphene for initial surface measurements. Deposition success was measured using SEM and AFM.
