Radical-mediated thiol-ene chemistry is highly efficient and has been utilized in recent decades for both bulk polymerization and polymer modification. More recently, thiol–ene chemistry has been applied to heterogeneous polymerizations for the production of poly(thioether) particles, and in particular the development of emulsion polymerizations using thiol–ene monomers to form functional nanoparticles. Using this approach, it has been shown that the average particle diameter can be pre-determined by appropriate choice of reaction conditions, and size homogeneity (monodispersity) can also be achieved. Furthermore, functionalization of the nanoparticles can be achieved either through the addition of functional thiol or ene moieties or through post-polymerization modification, such as oxidation of the thioether bonds present in the polymer particles to form sulfoxide bonds. This research explores the oxidation of poly(thioether) particles and their use to make polymer films. Applications of this work may be found in a range of areas, from coatings to nanoparticle tracking.
