Quantitative Analysis is a branch of chemistry that deals with the analysis of the amount of a certain substance, ion, or compound in a sample. This can be done with a variety of methods including gravimetric analysis, titration, and volumetric analysis. At Utica College Quantitative Analysis, CHE 323 is a required course that teaches students about and how to use these analytical methods and gain experience for real-world experience. Throughout the semester, students explore these methods in the laboratory setting using procedures from the required text, <i>Fundamentals of Analytical Chemistry. </i>Procedure 38F-3 explores titrations with potassium permanganate to determine the amount of calcium in an unknown sample of limestone. The lab produces a high amount of hazardous waste which has a high amount of unused potassium permanganate. Potassium permanganate is ranked Category 1 for skin corrosion, eye damage, and aquatic hazard (long and short term), a Category 2 oxidizer, and Category 4 oral acute toxicity according to the Globally Harmonized System (GHS). The ideal outcome for this research will be to replace potassium permanganate with a less harmful oxidizer that keeps the complexity and analytical precision of the procedure and/or scales down the experiment to generate less waste. Based on additional data collected, a scaled-down version of the procedure is possible with a variety of unknown samples of limestone. Preliminary data on the use of a substitute for potassium permanganate will be presented. Incorporating green chemistry methods is a great way to lessen the burden of removing hazardous waste while allowing students to learn about the complex methods of analytical chemistry and green chemistry.
