Nanostructured materials have become critically important in many areas of technology because of their unusual physical/chemical properties due to confined dimensions. Owing to their intrinsic hierarchical micro-/nano-structures, unique chemical/physical properties and tailorable functionality, hydrogels and their derivatives recently emerge as an important class of multifunctional materials and have received increasing interests in the scientific community. Bottom-up synthetic strategies to design and modify their molecular architectures enable nanostructured functional hydrogels to address several critical challenges in renewable energy and environmental technologies.<br/> <br/>These nanostructured hydrogels as organic building blocks offer an array of advantageous features such as intrinsic nanostructured conducting framework, exceptional electrochemical activity to store and transport ions, and synthetically tunable polymer-water interactions. Several recent advances on these nanostructured hydrogels-enabled energy and environmental applications will be showcased including high-energy lithium-ion batteries, electrocatalysts, and solar water desalination and atmospheric water harvesting. I will illustrate ‘structure-derived multifunctionality’ of this special class of materials.<br/>
