Carvacrol is a monoterpene naturally present in a variety of medicinal plant species, such as oregano and thyme. While carvacrol has been used in folk medicine, it may have potential in the clinical setting, as carvacrol has been shown to exhibit antioxidant, antibacterial, and antitumor properties.  However, newly synthesized derivatives of carvacrol have not yet been investigated and may also exhibit advantageous properties. The anticancer effects of carvacrol derivatives were tested on several human cancer cell lines, including cervical, colon, and breast cancers. Cells treated with carvacrol and its derivatives were assessed for cell viability using XTT colorimetric assays. To determine whether cells treated with these compounds are undergoing caspase mediated apoptosis, we will examine whether PARP cleavage is occurring in cells treated with the most potent derivatives. Additionally, we will examine whether the mitochondrial membrane potential is affected in treated cells.<br/>
