Pyridine carboxylates have been used extensively in the research areas of sensing, catalysis, and crystal engineering for some time as they have both hard and soft binding sites, in addition to strong chelation effects. Likewise, they have proven useful in the synthesis of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) where pore volume can be increased using an isoreticular approach, wherein the organic linker is lengthened and the pore volume effectively tuned. In particular, 2,2’-bipyridine-4,4’-dicarboxylic acid and 2,2’-bipyridine-5,5’-dicarboxylic acid are of interest, with two nitrogen donors in proximity allowing for chelation to occur at a metal center. For the actinides, such coordination provides the opportunity to assemble UO<sub>2</sub><sup>2+</sup> frameworks towards waste management and environmental separations, and/or the ability to harness the luminescent behavior of U(VI) towards sensing applications. To the best of our knowledge, all published work to date on actinide-bipyridine dicarboxylates have incorporated a divalent transition metal into the structure at the time of synthesis. We, however, are targeting uranyl-based frameworks that may later be harnessed for second metal center incorporation and hence detection. Presented here are six novel single-metal 1D and 2D uranyl coordination polymers that have been solvothermally synthesized with 2,2’-bipyridine-4,4’-dicarboxylic acid and 2,2’-bipyridine-5,5’-dicarboxylic acid. Significant differences that are observed in coordination environment, supramolecular structure, and luminescence will be discussed.
