Two natural pesticides, azadirachtin and emamectin benzoate, are currently being used as effective treatments against the emerald ash borer (EAB), a non-native species responsible for many tree deaths across the United States and Canada. In exploring the effects of these treatments, this study investigates the potential for herd immunity in ash trees, that is, whether or not the presence of a lethal concentration of pesticide in the leaves of a treated tree provides immunity to surrounding untreated trees. In order to detect azadirachtin and emamectin benzoate residues, a QuEChERS acetonitrile extraction was performed with ash leaves collected from both treated and non-treated trees from study populations by our collaborators at the UMN entomology department. The extracted compounds were analyzed using optimized parameters on a Bruker HPLC-MS/MS system and concentrations were determined based on the target peak area. This information will be used in conjunction with the pesticide distribution data to better understand this possible herd immunity phenomenon.<br/>
