Lumazine is a molecule that has shown potential applications as a photodynamic (PDT) cancer therapy drug. Our work is an effort to classify the mechanism of cell death when lumazine is used as a PDT agent. Previous work has suggested an interaction between the excited state of lumazine and adenine deoxyribose monophosphate (dAMP), as well as a polymeric chain of deoxyribose guanine . Our work spectroscopically studies the interaction between lumazine and a polymeric chain of deoxyribose adenine. These interactions will be studied spectroscopically in solutions with and without oxygen to begin to discern if type 1 cell death (excited state electron transfer from lumazine to DNA) or type 2 cell death (creation of singlet oxygen which then leads to denaturation of the DNA) is occurring between lumazine and DNA.
