Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are open crystalline, porous materials that have high surface areas and are constructed by joining metal-containing units with organic linkers through strong bonds. MOFs are made through reticular synthesis, where the structural integrity and rigidity of the original building blocks remain unaltered in the final product. Variation in the starting materials results in MOFs with diverse surface areas, pore volumes, and subsequent applications including gas adsorption, separation, molecular recognition, and drug delivery. An organic starch, gamma-cyclodextrin, has recently gained attention as an organic linker due to its environmentally friendly and cost effective nature. The cyclic nature of gamma-cyclodextrin creates MOF pores with a cone-like structure that have a hydrophobic exterior and are 1.69 nm in diameter when combined with potassium-containing salts. Two simple methods to synthesize a gamma-cyclodextrin based MOF are reported here. Characterization and application tests were done with the two MOFs. The results indicated that gamma-cyclodextrin based MOFs are successful in the removal of organic dyes from a solvent. The larger pore size and hydrophobic properties of these MOFs likely contribute to its capability to remove organic materials. The removal of an organic dye with the MOF suggests that they would be applicable in water filtration. Further research will include the removal of other organic materials, the carbonization of each MOF, and the creation of an efficient filter.
