Positive health outcomes often rely on early diagnosis and treatment of disease. Neurological diseases are difficult to diagnose in the early stages and when they are diagnosed, treatment generally involves minimizing effects of symptoms not treatment of disease. Changes in neurochemical concentrations can indicate the onset of neurological disease. To monitor such changes, there is a need for sensors that are selective, rapid, and label-free with little to no sample processing. Our group focuses on the development of surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS)-based sensors for detection of biomarkers for neurological activity in non-invasively collected biofluids and through the skull. For <i>in vivo </i>detection, we use spatially offset Raman spectroscopy (SORS), where Raman scattering spectra is obtained from subsurface layers of turbid media through collection of Raman scattered light at a location that is spatially offset from the incident illumination point.  We combine SORS with SERS (termed SESORS) for low concentration detection of neurotransmitters in the micromolar (µM) to nanomolar (nM) concentration ranges.
