Lignin is the most abundant natural phenolic polymer, and it is the primary byproduct of the pulping and paper industries. In addition, a large amount of lignin is expected to be produced from second-generation biofuel production. Despite its potential as a renewable material for biofuel and chemicals, lignin is currently underutilized with the bulk of technical lignin being combusted for heat generation in the plant. The aim of this research is to understand the effect of chemoselective demethylation of phenolic methoxyl group (Ar-OCH3) to hydroxyl group (Ar-OH) on the lignin depolymerization. Additionally, oxidative depolymerization of the structurally modified lignin will be conducted to produce protocatechuic acid (PCA) and gallic acid (GA). PCA and GA have gained significant attention from both industries and academia because applications of those compounds are extensive. As naturally occurring antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds, both PCA and GA has been of great interest to the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and food community. However, the obtainable quantity of phenolic acids from plants or foods is very limited. Thus, lignin, one of the off-specification materials in the existing industries, could be a potential source of these compounds.
