The coinage metals (Ag, Au, and more recently Cu) play an essential role in electronics. Recently Cu has been of greater interest due to its low electric resistance and inexpensive cost, making it a leading choice for wiring and circuitry. Unfortunately, Cu readily reacts in harsh conditions (i.e., highly corrosive environments or radiation sources (i.e., outerspace, reactors, etc.)) easily losing its desired properties. Substitutional alloys have long been used to improve the overall properties of metals by tailoring their properties (i.e., mailability, resistance, strength). In this study, we explored doping copper with alternative fcc-metals to increase its radiation stability by providing a sink for high energy electromagnetic radiation. To achieve this goal, a variety of nanometals were doped into copper nanomaterials and printed via ink jet processes. While routes to these nanometals exist, it was discovered that metal acetylacetonate ([M(acac)x]) when reacted with lithium aluminum hydride ([LiAlH4]) readily reduced into a nanoalloy consisting of Al and the other metal. For this presentation, the synthesis of the [M(acac)x], characterization and properties of the products from the reduction will be presented. Other lithium metal hydrides ([LiMHy]) were synthesized via hydrogenation of lithium hydride ([LiH]) and the other desired metal. The reductive potential of these novel [LiMHy] precursors were studied by reducing [M(acac)x] to produce a wide range of nanoalloy materials. Details of the synthesis and reduction of the various [LiMHy], [M(acac)x], and final materials produced will be discussed in detail.
