Weed killers are used in the farming of various produce to eliminate unwanted plant growth that will affect the desired product. In order to kill these unwanted plants and stop them from growing, weed killers such as “Roundup” typically contain a toxic active ingredient, such as glyphosate [N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine] which is the active ingredient. Glyphosate is chemical that can be harmful to the human body when ingested. The purpose of this research is to develop the method of Matrix Assited Inlet Ionizatoin (MAII) mass spectrometry to detect the active ingredient in commericial weed killers, glyphosate, directly from environmental samples and ecological matrices. Our MAII method will overcome the differences previously associated with glyphosate ionization and will allow for immediate detection of herbicidal components directly from environmental matrices, such as leaves and soils.
