Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG) is one of the most popular probiotics used in foods, functional foods and supplements. The efficacy and functionality of LGG as a probiotic strongly depends on the dose taken and resident time in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT). In the study, we evaluated the kinetics of LGG growth in an established in vitro human gut microbial community, and the corresponding response of the community to the exogenous probiotic in term of population dynamics and metabolic production. This was accomplished by combining results of qPCR quantification, Next-Gen DNA sequencing, and chemical analysis using GC/MS and LC/MS. The results of this research provide information on the kinetics of LGG, and on the interactions between LGG and the mature gut microbiota. This can be used to design novel approaches for the application of this probiotic or to the development of new probiotics.
