Numerous studies have shown that lead contamination in drinking water, even at very low concentrations, can have irreversible health effects such as impaired brain development, anemia and other serious long-term health issues, particularly in infants and young children. Lead levels in several public drinking water sources in the Boston area, particularly those to which children have access, will be tested. Locations will include libraries, schools, and outdoor water fountains. In order to determine the very low lead concentrations using flame atomic absorption spectrometry, the samples will be prepared for analysis using micellar preconcentration methods to reach 100× the initial concentration. Specifically, using a surfactant (Triton X-114) and various chelating agents such as ammonium pyrrolidinedithiocarbamate (ADPC) and diethyldithiophosphate (DDTP) among others. This research will investigate the optimum preconcentrating conditions along with evaluating the final method for accuracy and precision against graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry.
