Silk fibroin (SF) is an excellent candidate for use in biomedical applications because of its slow degradation, biocompatibility, and robust mechanical and chemical properties. Here, the enhancement of SF via covalent modifications of tyrosine residues has been explored. We demonstrate the conversion of tyrosine into an o-aminophenol (amino tyrosine), and employ various methods of modification of the newly formed amine group. Synthesis methods and characterization using NMR, FTIR and UV-vis will be presented.<br/>
