Advanced ceramic materials (e.g., silicon carbide, SiC) exhibit excellent heat/chemical resistance, high stiffness, and damage tolerance. However, their use as structural materials is limited by their brittle nature. Moreover, traditional ceramic processing methods that rely on powder-based techniques are unable to fabricate complex architectures. To address these deficiencies, we have developed a preceramic ink for 3D printing of structural ceramics which uses block copolymers to direct a preceramic polymer (PCS) via self-assembly to produce nanoscale features. This ink, printed via direct ink writing (DIW), an extrusion-based printing method, allows us to fabricate hierarchically controlled structures across multiple length scales (i.e., the nano- to macroscale). This PCS-based ink is tailored to exhibit the desired rheological properties for printing architected ceramics. The mechanical and thermal properties of these materials, as well as their possible applications, will be presented.
