Lanthanum radioisotopes have potential diagnostic (132La, t1/2 = 4.59 h, 42% β+; 133La, t1/2 = 3.91 h, 7.2% β+) and therapeutic (135La, t1/2 = 19.93 h, 98.1% EC) applications in nuclear medicine. The University of Wisconsin Cyclotron Group has developed sustainable accelerator targets for these radionuclides based on solid targets of metallic barium and barium oxide, using barium of both natural and isotopically enriched compositions. These targets have been irradiated on small, medical cyclotrons, and the lanthanum isolated by precipitation and extraction chromatography. The radiolanthanum produced has been applied to radiolabel molecular probes for both targeted and untargeted preclinical in vivo and in vitro experiments, examining 135La as a model low energy electron-emitting radionuclide and 132/133La as theranostic analogues of large 3+ metal cations, including the alpha-emitting 225Ac.
