Ionic liquids are of great interest in modern chemistry because of their ever-growing list of applications including, but not limited to pharmaceuticals, batteries, lubricants, biomass processing, use as an electrocatalyst for water splitting, and as a solvent for synthetic organic, inorganic, and biological reactions. Ionic liquids possess such a wide range of applications due to their vast customizability. However, the majority of modern customization is routed in the variation of cations. There appears to be a significant deficiency of anions throughout the field of ionic liquids. In a quest to resolve this issue we have synthesized a small library of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium based salts of varying hydrophilic, charge-diffused anions, i.e. diethyldithiocarbamate, 2,6-dichloroindophenol, and 2-mercaptopyridine n-oxide. Structural characterization by 1H NMR, 13C NMR, and by SCXRD has confirmed the synthesis of these ionic liquids. Thermophysical properties have been determined via DSC and TGA. We hope to obtain structure-property relationships, which can be utilized in the design of materials for specific applications.
