Cyclopentadienone-based iron carbonyl catalysts are air- and moisture-stable and are based on an earth-abundant metal. These properties make them appealing for practical reasons.  They catalyze a variety of redox transformations, including carbonyl and imine reductions, reductive aminations, and borrowing hydrogen processes. We are interested in applying them to selective alcohol transfer dehydrogenations, which use a simple carbonyl compound as a hydrogen acceptor in place of a strong oxidant. When acetone is used as the hydrogen acceptor, secondary alcohols are oxidized to ketones but primary alcohols afford low quantities of aldehydes. This selectively is likely due to acetone’s low oxidation potential, which disfavors aldehyde formation. We recently discovered that cyclopentadienone substitution affects the inherent selectivity of the catalyst for primary vs. secondary alcohol oxidation, and we have begun to explore a series of (cyclopentadienone)iron carbonyl catalysts in the selective oxidation of 1-phenylethanol over benzyl alcohol. Our initial results of this study will be presented.<br/>
