Lead white (basic lead carbonate, 2PbCO3.Pb(OH)2) was the primary ingredient in white pigments from antiquity until the 1800s, since which time concerns about its toxicity have restricted its use. We have re-examined the decomposition kinetics of lead white using modern instrumentation and methods. Decomposition mechanisms based on regression analysis of mass vs time curves are proposed.
