Conducting catalysis on solid surfaces in liquid phase profoundly changes sorption and catalytic transformation compared to reactions at the gas-solid interface. These changes are caused by differences in the stabilization of ground and transition states along reaction pathways <i>and</i> the potential modification of the catalyst surface in presence of (polar) solvents. As a consequence, the standard chemical potentials of reacting substrates are influenced along the reaction pathway. The lecture will describe and analyze the thermodynamic and kinetic consequences for acid-base and metal catalyzed reactions, specifically for elimination and hydrogenolysis of alcohols and the hydrogenation of aldehydes and aromatic molecules, partly in the presence of an external electric potential. Focus will be on describing new reaction pathways induced by the joint presence of hydronium ions and organic solvents and reactants and the role of the potentials generated by the reactivity of metal particles and of oxide surfaces in this environment. The combination of spectroscopy of the reacting substrates and catalysts, isotope labelling, detailed kinetics and density functional theory will be used to describe what is currently known for selected catalytic pathways and how this insight can be used for catalyst design.
