Bis(η5-cyclopentadienyl)dichloridotitanium(IV) is a widely used early transition metal complex with applications in organic synthesis, catalysis, and polymer and medicinal chemistries. Despite the wide utilization of this complex, there are no standard teaching laboratory procedures for it. This teaching-laboratory-style procedure is presented as a colorful and accessible alternative to classic metallocene targets. A modernized and streamlined procedure and work-up protocol have been developed enabling student groups to complete all steps from cyclopentadiene distillation to product isolation and characterization within a single laboratory session. Student characterization of purified product is completed with a variety of spectroscopic techniques. Several small application tests have also been explored as extensions to spark student interest in the multitude of uses of this complex.
