Associating groups offer an approach to tune mechanical and transport properties of a given polymer backbone. For this reason, associating polymers are desirable for several applications from adhesives and packaging to performance materials with stimuli responsiveness. Typically, however, applications are limited for associating polymers because of the difficulties related to processing them. In this work we use shear and extensional rheology to measure the effect of associating group strength on the processability of associating polymer melts. Additionally, we measure the polymer performance in terms of mechanical properties as well as self-healing behavior. We show that fundamental molecular timescales related to the polymer backbone and associating groups govern both the processing window and the ultimate performance. With this work we develop a simple framework to guide the design highly tunable materials with selectable properties through chemistry.<br/>
