Over the past several semesters, undergraduate chemistry students in the CH187: Inorganic Chemistry and Qualitative Analysis Laboratory at Southeast Missouri State University have participated in a course-based research project, which serves as an equitable introduction to research for around 100 students a semester. Students have attempted to grow diffraction-quality crystals of compounds with known structures with the goal of depositing improved structures to Cambridge Structural Database. For example, the structure of O-methyl-hydroxylamine hydrochloride (CSD refcode MOXAMC) was redetermined (and deposited as MOXAMC01) to a higher level of precision, and also corrected a long-standing transcription error in an atomic coordinate. The current project has extended this approach by now focusing on combinatorial crystal growth of new compounds in order for the class to make original contributions to the body of scientific knowledge early in their academic careers. This involved initially combining homophthalic acid with a variety of metal salts, and other potential ligands or counterions under a variety of conditions. Students have some freedom to choose which metal salt, solvent, conditions, or other ligands or counterions to use in order to replicate an open-ended research project. Early results have produced previously known compounds (e.g. bis(guandinium) tetrachlorozincate(II); CSD refcode: HORGOK01) refined to better R values for database deposition.
