Today one of the main forms of delivery of many drugs, including THC from cannabis, cannabidiol (CBD), and nicotine, is through incorporation into a mixture of propylene glycol and glycerin and aerosolized using an electronic devices called a vaporizer, vape pen, or electronic cigarette. Each device operates differently including temperatures reached and amount of aerosol produced. In addition, product characteristics influence a user’s topography, including puff flow rate and puff duration, which will have an effect on the emissions produced and therefore exposure to the intended drug and other constituents. To better understand emissions, first topographies of individual users in their natural environment must be studied. Then individual devices must be puffed in a controlled laboratory setting using conditions that encompass these topographies. Through the use of product specific wPUMTM topography monitors (Wireless Personal Use Monitor) developed in the Respiratory Technologies Lab at Rochester Institute of Technology, we obtain minimally influenced topography data from users in their natural environment for several weeks at a time. The results of these studies are used to determine the range of topographers used in the lab to puff each device using RITs PESTM (Programmable Emissions System). We have found, and will discuss, that topography influences emissions including total particulate matter, emission of drug of interest as well as other additives, as well as decomposition products such as formaldehyde and acetaldehyde. This talk will discuss the technology used to obtain user topographies, how different devices produce different average topographies, and how the topographies influences emissions.
