Atmospheric extinction and optical depth affects astronomical observations as spectral flux varies with the observing direction. This effect is particularly relevant, affecting spectral observations and color calibration. We propose to measure and characterize the local extinction, and develop a protocol to correct this effect during the acquisition and processing of astronomical data.
