The production of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is of great importance because it is a platform molecule of industrially significant fine chemicals. In this work, glucose has been chosen as the starting material because of is the most abundant hexose contained in lignocellulosic biomass. The production of HMF from glucose is difficult due to the complexity of the reaction requiring the use of catalysts that exhibit Lewis-type acidity for glucose-to-fructose isomerization and Brønsted-type acid catalysts for the dehydration of fructose and the formation of HMF. MOF (Metal Organic Frameworks) are composed of metals coordinated to organic compounds. Metals in general have a high oxidation state and can act as Lewis acids, which allows the isomerization of glucose to fructose. We propose the use of different catalysts of the type (MOF) together with the acid Brønsted for the transformation of glucose into 5HMF. The reaction was carried out in stirred tank reactors in a Mettler Toledo Easy Max® equipment. A solution of 1% glucose (0.05g) in 5mL of GVL-10%H2O was used and 0.08g of MOF catalyst and 0.0167g of H4SiW12O40 as Brønsted acid catalyst were added, at 140°C for different reaction times and were analyzed by HPLC (Agilent 1200) with Agilent Hi-Plex H column .The results of HMF yield are depicted Figure 1. In all the catalysts, the formation of HMF were observed, while in an experiment without catalyst the formation of HMF was not observed. The catalyst with the highest yield at 5HMF is MIL-53(Al) reaching a value of 37% after 6 hours of reaction. At low reaction time, catalysts based on MIL-53(Al) and Fe-BTC presented similar HMF yield, while the yield for Cu-BTC was clearly lower. However, for long reaction time the HMF yield is quite similar for Cu-BTC and Fe-BTC, and clearly higher for the MIL-53(Al) based catalysts.
