A fundamental understanding of the interaction between the polymer material properties and the processing device is imperative to improve both materials and printers used in Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF). It is well established that z-strength is a limiting factor to achieving bulk mechanical properties of 3D printed objects. This strength is dictated by the weld developed between the molten filament deposited onto the substrate. Improved weld strength can be gained using a high extrusion temperature allowing the substrate polymer to melt when the extruded filament is deposited letting molecules on either side of the interface to reptate eliminating this defect. However, this is only part of challenge to improving weld strength. The extruded filament must wet the substrate to obtain complete contact at the interface. Structured, functional polymers typically have adverse rheological properties that hinder wetting (flow) to increase the contact area and thereby improved interfacial strength. In this talk I will discuss material – processing interactions and how they can be optimized to make stronger 3D printed objects using FFF.
