Nanotechnology is playing an increasing role in all industries, including fashion and design. In our approach, we are pushing the limits of nanotechnology and biofabrication to create prototype materials for use in the fashion industry and for biomedical applications. Studying these materials offers us new insights into a product’s lifecycle impacts and the contribution of nanotechnology in the circular economy. Our studies include assessing the use of nanoparticles as flame retardants, as well as investigating their optical (including dichroism) and electronic properties. Here, we focus on incorporating nanoparticles in various matrices, such as cotton, wool, bioplastic and bacterial cellulose.  Overall, this approach allows us to investigate new composite materials, advance knowledge in material science, and engage future leaders of the fashion industry in design with emerging materials, lifecycle assessment, sustainability and circularity.
