Even after more than a century of investigation, the phenomenon of linkage isomerization of nitrite/nitrito coordination compounds is still attracting interest in both fundamental and practical aspects. Among the numerous inorganic complexes that exhibit linkage isomerism are the thermochromic nitrite (NO2–) coordination compounds of nickel with bidentate nitrogen ligands (e.g., ethylenediamine, bipyridine). We have developed a modular laboratory investigation that integrates inorganic synthesis, spectroscopy, thermodynamics and computational chemistry. Following synthesis, solid-state spectroscopic thermochromic behavior was monitored with reflectance visible light spectroscopy and the energetics of the linkage isomerism were studied by differential scanning calorimetry. The experimentally observed characteristics were compared to the computed energetic parameters of the isomerization by density functional theory. The investigation is suitable for the inorganic or advanced analytical laboratory.
