Hydroamination is the addition of an N-H bond across a C=C or C≡C bond in order to synthesize pyrrolidines or piperidines. Due to its high activation energy, hydroamination reactions require a catalyst. Our lab has recently published the asymmetric hydroamination of aminoallenes using titanium complexes of chiral bulky imine diol ligands. As an earth abundant metal, the use of titanium catalysts is especially interesting from a sustainability perspective. The resulting pyrrolidine products could serve as a building block for more complex molecules which could be potentially useful for pharmaceutical development. The best ligand from our published study was sterically bulky with di-tert-butyl substitution. We changed the substitution pattern with various aryl groups to see if the hydroamination reaction proceeded with increased enantioselectivity. We will also report our results using several proline derived ligands.
