Two step process was used to prepare activated carbon from periwinkle shell using H2SO4, ZnCl2 and NaOH as activating agents. Ash content was found to be 11.7% which is an indication of good yield carbon yield. The produced activated carbon was compared with commercial activated carbon (CAC) with respect to uptake of the organic component responsible for BOD and COD in petrochemical effluent. Batch adsorption method was used for interaction of activated carbon with the effluent with respect expressed in terms of percentage removal. The findings indicated that the percentage BOD removed by AC1 ranged from 12.72 - 22.72%, AC2 ranged from 11.40 - 37.50% and AC3 ranged from 6.98 - 23.14% while percentage COD removed by AC1 ranged from 71.43 - 80.00%, AC2 ranged from 58.57 - 72.85% and AC3 ranged from 58.57 - 74.28% respectively. Generally, AC1, AC2 and AC3 have better efficiency and adsorption capacity compared to CAC. Thus, the potential to use the periwinkle shell that litter our environment as a waste is a valuable and low cost resources for the removal of organic matter from petrochemical effluent before discharged into the water bodies.
