Regular discharge of industrial, domestic and agricultural effluents in the water reservoirs are contributing majorly in the water pollution. Decontamination of water is the need of the hour to fulfil the water scarcity and improve water quality. The residues of pharmaceutical ingredients in water cause serious problem as their biological activity impose adverse effects on aquatic ecosystems and human health. Among various technologies applied to clean wastewater, photocatalysis is the most favourable and potential method as it adopts the use of renewable solar energy and completely degrade the pollutant. In this context, we have designed and prepared novel MoS2/ZnS nanohybrid following hydrothermal approach. MoS2/ZnS nanohybrid was thoroughly characterized by XRD, XPS, FTIR, Raman, SEM and HRTEM. Optical properties of material were studied by using UV-Vis and PL spectroscopic techniques. The potential of the synthesized material was evaluated as photocatalyst to degrade several antibiotic contaminations in wastewater. Details photocatalytic study was performed on oxytetracycline antibiotic photo-degradation in wastewater. Approximately >90% 20 ppm oxytetracylcine was degraded in 4 hours of solar light illumination using 40 mg of photocatalyst. Moreover, First-principles calculation was also used to gain further knowledge of the mechanism behind the enhanced photocatalytic performance, charge transfer process, band alignment, electronic, optical and interfacial properties of MoS2/ZnS nanocomposite. The detailed mechanism of photodegradation of antibiotics using MoS2/ZnS nanohybrid as a photocatalyst will be discussed in this presentation.
