Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) are prospective alternatives to traditional silicon-based cell owing to their superior performance in diffused light. Ruthenium-based sensitizers dominate the trend of DSSC development due to their strong metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) properties and stable ground and excited state potentials. Introduction of new chromophore unit with high molar absorptivity and broader spectral response to the ligands of ruthenium complexes is one of the useful methods to enhance the photoconversion performance. Here is a summarized report of novel Ru(II)-based sensitizers designed and synthesized in our research group within 3 years. The synthetic strategy is mainly modifying the ancillary ligands to sequentially adjust the photophysical and electrochemical properties. The resulted overall DSSC efficiencies varied from 3.32% to 8.71%.
