Considering the significant contribution of CO2 as a greenhouse gas, controlling CO2 emissions from fossil fuels combustion is critical for mitigating the global warming. According to the data from International Energy Agency (IEA), the global fossil CO2 emission was approximately 33.1 Gt in 2018, and the atmospheric concentration have been elevated to 407 ppm. For one perspective, CO2 capture and separation technologies are important strategies to alleviate CO2 release from the power and industrial sectors and have attracted extensive attention. In addition to capture CO2 from flue gas or air, separating CO2 is also valuable in the purification of biogas or natural gas to obtain high-purity biomethane. Currently, the most commercial technology for capture or separation of CO2 is based on the chemical absorption using amine solution, in comparison of physical absorption, pressure swing adsorption, cryogenic separation, membrane separation and others. However, amine scrubbing is faced with such disadvantages as high energy consumption, amine leaching, corrosion to equipment, and other environmental problems. Therefore, solid amine sorbents are prepared by functionalizing amine molecules into porous support, and can efficiently avoid these concerns. In theory, the material can be regenerated by swing temperature or pressure, and achieve CO2 capture in a long-term operation.  
Nevertheless, amine-functionalized sorbents are known to degrade via various pathways including oxidative degradation induced by O2, which exists in flue gas (3-10%), biogas (0-1%) and air (21%). The oxidation of amines seems to be a challenging puzzle for the practical application. In our study, we prepared polyethylenimine-functionalized silica- the most potential decarburizing sorbent, and explored its oxidation behavior under O2-containing atmosphere. We demonstrate that the sorbent is possible to be stable to capture CO2 from O2-containing atmosphere at an appropriate operating temperature (less than 75℃), since the oxidative degradation is temperature-dominated. This provides a reference strategy for addressing the stability issue.
