1,3-dioxolanes are important chemical raw materials, which can be used to synthesize steroids and carbohydrates, serve as the intermediates to protect carbonyl groups or diols. Besides, some 1,3-dioxolanes are used as solvent in chemical reactions. In the recent year, some 1,3-dioxolanes are found to have special flavor and are used in food and tobacco industry. Some catalyst like anhydrous Cu(SO4)2, montmorillonite, Lewis acids and etc are used to synthesize 1,3-dioxolanes from epoxides and ketones/aldehydes. Among these catalysts, anhydrous Cu(SO4)2 was found to have low yield and long reacting time, montmorillonite show bad result while applying larger epoxide molecular, some Lewis acids show poor selectivity and yield isomerized products. Anhydrous zinc and magnesium halides afforded the rearranged products. By applying hollow sphere mesoporous material mesoporous material loaded by Zn(OTf)2 we obtained relatively good result. Epoxides, ketones/aldehydes and hollow sphere mesoporous material mesoporous material loaded by Zn(OTf)2 were added in a sealed reaction kettle under magnetic stiring , at certain reacting temperature and time. Reactants were cooled and analyzed by GC-MS. Conversion and yields are calculated based on GC-MS results. After separation and purification of the product, 1,3-dioxolane, was obtained and analyzed through MS, 1H NMR and IR to assure the structure. hollow sphere mesoporous material material loaded by Zn(OTf)2 showed good catalytic performance in the reaction of 1,3-dioxolanes formation with yields of 98-99% from various epoxides and ketones/aldehydes. So we can see hollow sphere mesoporous material loaded by Zn(OTf)2 is an effective catalyst for this reaction. Compared with Cu(SO4)2, Cu(OTf)2，ZnX2, and montmorillonite, better results were achieved by hollow sphere mesoporous material mesoporous material loaded by Zn(OTf)2 nearly without rearrangement of epoxides to aldehydes or ketones as side products. And the structure of catalyst hollow sphere mesoporous material proved by the means of XRD and TEM measurements is remained even after six times of catalyst reactions.
