Our S-STEM project at the University of Wisconsin-Madison welcomes juniors and senior with financial need who, in addition to their STEM major, are pursuing a degree or certificate in environmental studies or sustainability. This selection criterion brings together a talented interdisciplinary group of students, all of whom are considering careers that connect STEM disciplines to the environment and its stewardship. Once recruited into the program, our STEM students have the opportunity to become part of CESP, the Community Environmental Scholars Program. This cohort-based program in the Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies allows students to “link their passion for the environment with a commitment to community.” Now in its 10th year, CESP provides the opportunity to work with community-based environmental organizations and a place to discuss the connections among current environmental challenges and community engagement. Who are our S-STEM students and which paths do they pursue when they graduate? Why do we focus on the junior and senior years of study? What lessons have we learned and what mid-course corrections have we made? This presentation, given by a PI of two successful NSF S-STEM grants, will address questions such as these.
