Expanded graphite (EG) with different expansion volume was prepared by chemical oxidation method. Modified EG was prepared by encapsulating poly-acrylate with different expansion ratio of EG. Modified EG/polyamide 66 (PA66) composites were prepared by modified EG. The effects of modified EG with different expansion volume on mechanical properties and thermal conductivity of the composites were studied. The results showed that the surface roughness and reactive groups of EG increased obviously after acrylate modification. The elastic modulus and flexural strength of composites increased with the expansion volume of modified EG, compared with unexpanded graphite. The increase was 36.1% and 25.8%, respectively; the tensile strength, elongation at break and thermal conductivity increased first and then decreased with the increase of expansion volume. The tensile strength reaches a maximum value of 75.6 MPa when the EG expansion volume is 40 mL/g, the thermal conductivity was preferably 2.56 W/(mk) when the expansion volume was 20 mL/g, which was compared with unexpanded graphite. The tensile strength and thermal conductivity increased by 33.3% and 30.1%, respectively.
