Air pollution arising from automotive emissions is a point of major concern due to the dangerous impact on human health and the environment. Other than carbon dioxide, several toxic exhausts are generated by burning fossil fuels such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, volatile organic compounds, and ground-level ozone. Scientific evidence has shown oxygenates help to reduce these dangerous pollutants resulting from combustion. For this reason, they have spread widely as additives.<br/>Diisopropyl Ether (DIPE) has been recognized as one of the most promising ones due to its ability to blend with gasoline. Nevertheless, an in-depth evaluation of its combustion features is needed before endorsing its use as a fuel additive.<br/>We studied the oxidation process of DIPE by using Multiplexed Synchrotron Photoionization Mass Spectrometry (MPIMS) at the Advanced Light Source (ALS) of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratories (LBNL). Experiments have been carried out at three different temperatures (298, 550, and 650 K) and products have been identified on the basis of their mass-to-charge ratio, photoionization spectra, and kinetic traces.<br/>Acetone, propanal, propene, and isopropyl acetate have been identified as the major reaction products.<br/>This work provides significant evidence about the change of product-leading reaction mechanisms when the temperature increases from 298 K to higher values.
