I'm currently a Ph.D. Student studying Genomics and Computational Biology at the University of Pennsylvania. I've recently founded the Black Women in Computational Biology Network, a growing online Network Platform for Black women working or enthusiastic about computational biology and related computational life sciences. I formed the network to create a space for people from unique academic backgrounds that bridge interdisciplinary fields to exchange ideas, resources, experiences, and create community. With computational biology and bioinformatics academic programs and research cores still growing among the broader scientific field, it's easy for underrepresented minorities to feel disconnected, isolated, and undercelebrated. This is especially true for Black Women--the "most educated" minority group, but definitely one of the most underrepresented STEM fields as a whole. The Network serves to connect Black women from across the globe to one another through intellectual engagement, science communication, and community building to develop collaborations and professional connections that ultimately advance the science that we all love. Though we do have members across all professional and academic levels of expertise (from undergraduate to industry professionals), The Network builds bridges across these expertise levels and allows for the exchange of resources through mentorship that prepares all members for the next step in their academic and professional careers. We communicate on an informal basis about current events and interesting science that allows us to collaborate and think critically about important topics in our field. We exchange opportunities for all professional levels and share the stories of our scientific journeys with one another. All these and more are what make the growing community and its members stronger, our voices in STEM louder, and our science even more exciting.
