Globally, research has proven that many plants have medicinal value. The discovery of new therapeutic natural products is highly welcomed in other to reduce side effect associated with many synthetic drugs. This study characterized the presence of alkaloids in Mucana puriens and Annona senegalensis using gas chromatography coupled mass spectroscopy method (Agilent GC-MS, 7890A coupled with MDS 5975C). The Alkaloid fraction of the leaves were gotten using solvent treatment and fractionation technigue and then subjected to GC-MS for characterization of individual Alkaloids. nineteen (19) compounds were found in Mucana puriens with Acetamide 2,2,2 trichloro- (8.59), metaraminol (4.47), cathine (4.29) and 1,2 propanediol, 3chloro- (5.34) as the highest while Annona senegalensis showed the presence of 12 alkaloid compounds with Amphetamine (5.97), azetidine, 1 methyl 3,3-dipentyl (11.64) and phenylephrine (14.49) as the highest occurring alkaloids. The study showed that Mucuna puriens has the highest number of Alkaloids, though the two plant has appreciated number of alkaloids which suggested that the plants could serve as good therapeutic agents.
