The integration of plasmonic materials with chiral structures is currently revolutionizing a variety of nanoscience fields including nanophotonics and provides new possibilities for achieving negative refractive index, invisibility cloaking, perfect lens, and artificial magnetism at optical frequencies. Previously, our group developed a new class of chiral nanostructures by combining the crystallographic control of nanoparticles and enantioselective chemistry between organic and inorganic materials. By exposing high-Miller-index surfaces to colloidal gold nanoparticles and inducing enantioselective interactions with cysteine and glutathione, 432 symmetric gold nanoparticles with significant chiral morphology were synthesized. Further studies revealed that the formation of chiral morphology was determined by the crystallographic growth pathways and cooperative chirality expression. In this context, we utilized dipeptides for the first time to encode chirality on the nanostructures. Based on our previous work, we expanded the sequence of chiral peptides and enabled precise tuning of chiral morphologies and chiroptical responses of gold nanoparticles. Importantly, we demonstrated that the formation of chiral morphology can be systematically understood based on crystallographic analysis.<br/>Herein, we closely investigated the geometric structure of nanocrystals in colloidal synthesis using chiral shape modifiers from a crystallographic perspective. We explored the effects of dipeptides on chiral morphology, providing an in-depth understanding of the interplay between particle growth and chirality formation. We are convinced that the efforts to crystallographically analyze the chiral morphology of nanocrystals allows us to ultimately understand the three-dimensional structure of chiral nanomaterials and the resulting chiroptic response. We believe that the analysis of the effect of the peptide sequences on chiral shape development suggests fundamental principles for the design of the morphologies and properties of nanoparticles for versatile applications as well as for peptide incorporation during nanoparticle growth.
