Although it has decreased in popularity in these past several years, biodiesel is still a useful source of renewable energy. Compared to petro-fuels, biodiesel fuel is an alternative fuel that has been shown to be safer for the environment. Biodiesel fuel is produced via a base-catalyzed transesterification reaction. Additives can be blended with biodiesel to improve the efficiency and quality of the fuel. The focus of this research is the investigation of explosive additives for improving the efficiency of biodiesel. While there is a basis for the use of explosives to increase the enthalpy of combustion of biodiesel, there are not many publications regarding explosive additives in biodiesel. Herein, we present our experimental results using explosive additives in biodiesel characterize by bomb calorimetry, solubility analysis, and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS).
