The malodor problem from the dewatering and storage of liquid sludge from chemically-enhanced primary treatment (CEPT) process is an urgent problem. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is generated at different stages of CEPT process starting from the liquid sludge holding tanks to dewatering centrifuges and dewatered sludge storage silos and transport container. The H2S, NH3 and VOCs are continuously generated by microbial actions during the entire process. Hydrogen sulfide is particularly problematic. It is generated by sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) under septic condition, is released from the liquid sludge in the holding tanks, during the dewatering process and from the sludge cake stored in silos. To tackle this problem, a continuous production process has been developed to produce multifunctional odor-control (MOC) gel in bead form. The MOC gel selectively targets SRB present in sludge, decreasing both their viability and activity, while simultaneously scavenging dissolved sulfide. The continuous production system is able to produce the MOC gel in larger scale and in standard size. In order to successfully operate the production process, the factors affecting the reactions involved in the MOC gel production have been studied and controlled. Furthermore, the advantages obtained from the use of MOC gel beads are exhibited.
