Electrospinning is one of the earliest developed methods for synthesizing micron to submicron sized polymer fibers for potential applications in energy storage, catalysis, filtration, drug delivery and so on. Fabrication of electrospun ceramic fibermats for use as reinforcement in ceramic matrix composites may allow development of lightweight, high strength parts for high temperature aerospace applications. The preparation of flexible and bendable SiOC fibermats via electrospinning of polysiloxanes and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) hybrid precursors is reported in this work. PVP is introduced as co-spin agent to provide viscosity of the spinning precursor. The prepared fiber mats are crosslinked (in air) and pyrolyzed (in Ar at 800 °C) for polymer-to-ceramic conversion.
