Recently, a new family of layered materials called MAB phases - MAX phases with X = boron - have received increased interest for their mechanical, oxidation resistant and functional properties. Following the MXene route, they have also been candidates for novel 2D borides (MBenes) synthesis. Furthermore, MBenes have been theoretically predicted to have excellent performance for Li-ion batteries. Herein, we have investigated the single-phase synthesis of the Ni(n+1)ZnBn (n = 1, 2) MAB phases and studied their potential for Li-ion batteries. Interestingly, exposing these materials to acid, caused opening between the layers and created some pores in the bulk samples without chemical etching. Our results clearly show that MAB phases containing pores or opened sheets (nanosheets), which show higher surface areas compared to the pristine MAB, become highly acive for Li-ion battery applications. This work not only confirms the theoretical predictions but also it hints at an exciting future for MBenes and nanosheets borides as excellent battery materials.
