The use of Single Particle Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry (spICP-MS) has emerged as a powerful tool to characterize nanoparticles in different matrices. In this talk, we will discuss the uses of spICP-MS to answer nanoparticle questions in real-world hydrocarbon samples that traditionally use Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS), or Nanotracking Analysis (NTA) for size characterization in the petroleum industry.<br/>We present the application of this technique on the particle size characterization of several cases that our lab has seen over the past 4 years. The unique advantage of spICP-MS offer as multielement characterization technique is presented. Our results obtained by sp-ICP-MS were compared to the conventional techniques routinely used for nanoparticle characterization.<br/>Finally, some other potential applications in this industry will be also covered. <br/>
